“I’ve started a business, what’s the deal with having to have first aid?”
In short, as a business owner, you have a legal obligation to your staff regarding providing facilities and training in the workplace – this is an Australian-wide standard (WHS Regulation 42). The Safe Work Australia Model Code of Practice is our go to for policy regarding workplace First Aid requirements, however each state also has their own guidance. We understand that reading through these documents and finding resources can be challenging, so we’ve summarised it for you:

- All persons conducting a business or undertaking must provide first aid equipment and ensure each worker has access to that equipment
- Ensure access to the facilities to provide first aid
- Ensure that an adequate number of workers are trained in first aid at that workplace or that workers have access to an adequate number of people who have been trained to administer first aid
Considerations for your Business:
- the number, location and contents of your first aid kits and equipment
- the type of facilities you may need
- emergency procedures in place
- access to first aid facilities and trained personnel
- the type of risks and hazards that are common in your workplace
- outstanding medical conditions that may affect your team (for example, personnel with asthma in a sporting organisation)
- communication systems currently in place
- WH&S reporting techniques available to you and your staff
A thorough risk assessment is a great way to ensure you stay nationally compliant. However, if you’re not local to the South-East Queensland area, it is a great idea to keep in mind what you need from someone who you’ve hired to come in and service your first aid needs:
- Ensure that your first aid kits remain stocked with in-date, serviceable equipment.
- When your staffing changes, you adjust your workplace policies to reflect your growing needs.
- The person servicing your business has a working history in WH&S or clinical governance, so you know your advice is coming from a place of experience and knowledge.
So, what’s the worst that can happen if you don’t do any of this? Someone could get seriously hurt. It’s best to avoid this, to begin with, but also to ensure that you and your staff are covered in case of an emergency.
